Kindergarten Readiness

This checklist can be a guide as you prepare your child for school. If your child lags behind in some areas, don’t worry. Remember children grow and develop at different rates. 

Good Health and Physical Well-Being

My child:

  • Receives regular medical and dental care
  • Has all the necessary immunizations
  • Has a vision screening
  • Eats a balanced diet
  • Gets plenty of rest
  • Runs, jumps, plays outdoors and does other activities to develop large muscles
  • Works with puzzles, scribbles, colors, paints and more to develop small muscles

Language and General Knowledge

My child:

  • Is read to everyday
  • Has access to books and other reading materials
  • Has television viewing monitored by an adult
  • Is encouraged to ask questions
  • Is encouraged to solve problems
  • Can explain similarities and differences
  • Can sort and classify things
  • Is learning to write his/her name and address
  • Is learning to identify and name shapes and colors
  • Has opportunities to draw and be creative
  • Has opportunities to listen to, make music and dance

Social and Emotional Preparation

My child:

  • Has many opportunities to be with other children
  • Can share, take turns and cooperate with others
  • Is curious and motivated to learn
  • Can finish tasks
  • Is learning self-control
  • Can follow simple instructions
  • Helps with family chores
  • Is learning to use words to label and express emotions

Kindergarten Registration Information

All children who will be five years of age on or before September 1 are encouraged to be registered for kindergarten.

Early registration begins as early as March 1 for some schools. Check with your local school district for your kindergarten registration information.

  • Parent/legal guardian will need to bring:
  • Child’s official birth certificate (with raised seal)
  • Child’s social security number
  • Proof of residency
  • Copy of signed mortgage, contract to build or lease agreement showing the owner/resident’s name and address

OR TWO of the following

  • Utility bills which have the name and address of the resident
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Voter registration card
  • State medical card
  • Notarized affidavit of residency from parent or person with whom the child is residing, affirming the child eats and sleeps at the residence
  • Provide documentation of a current physical examination, immunizations PRIOR to starting school, AND proof of a dental exam.
  • You do not need proof of a physical, dental, or vision exam to register your child.

Make your child’s appointments for a kindergarten physical, dental, and vision exam by June.
